Jazmyn Joi Hill is a visual artist who creates film and video, both narrative and collage based, to portray aspects of how she views the world around her. Originally born in Detroit, MI Jazmyn Joi moved to Charlotte, NC at the age of 6 where she spent most of her adolescence before graduating high school and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; where she graduated in the summer of 2024. Using self captured video, found footage, and celluloid film Jazmyn Joi visualizes a way to present the contrasts seen in everyday life through the use of varying mediums while also providing a way to re-imagine pre-existing imagery and create a new way of seeing the world. Through concepts of lighting and editing techniques seen in production she focuses on highlighting the contrasting positives and negatives she see’s within the world. Although her creative ideas do not manifest in a structured manner these topics she explores are usually seen through a pessimistic lens such as African-American oppression, colonialism, sexuality, women's oppression, mental illness, climate change, and other various topics tied to humanity's flaws. Even with this pessimistic lens the artist finds a way to maintain a focus on the joys of life and looks for the little things within people and their lives to determine what makes us human.
My creative ideas have never manifested in a single order. Throughout my life my ideas have exhibited signs of my recurring existential crises as well as an underlying pessimistic attitude. Everyday is a constant question of what makes my art so important or life changing that it can be revered by the world not only for image sake but for its message. I tend to shed light onto this aspect of my art by focusing on the mood and impact of the narrative and incorporating precise lighting to set an overall tone that ties the work together. I am able to visualize the world from others perspectives to build a direct connection so they can see things through my eyes as well. This process gives me a chance to capture this raw compilation of images and submerge my audience into the idea itself so they can relate to the piece in some way. This ability to observe and focus on the small details gives me the chance to continuously expand on my ideas, without it I wouldn't be able to notice the growth and decay of our world as well as the wonder and changes people make .
Growing up in a southern suburb as a minority, on the aspect of race, gender, and sexuality, I have seen both the positives and negatives that come with being human and living in our ever changing society. I've seen the realities within our world, the corruption, greed, and chaos that leave people to get by on scraps, tattered clothing, and without a roof over their heads to call home. On the other side, I’ve seen a world of pure beauty and full of excitement. A world where some are genuinely loving and kind and are even able to show a sense of empathy and respect to one another even if they are strangers. This great contrast I have been living in has shown me not only the intricacies of the world and the people within it but also the tiny everyday things that occur when we aren't paying attention or are too busy to notice; the small instances that sway our decisions and dictate how we navigate through our lives. These moments find themselves hooked to my metaphorical keychain as I go throughout life, and from this keychain I'm able to take those moments and use them in my art.
